How Durban Businesses Can Improve Their Digital Presence
By Davidson Smangaliso Cele, Managing Director, Davidson and Family Group
Start with what a customer sees first
For most local businesses, that's either a Google search result, a social media profile, or a website — often in that order. It's worth checking, honestly, what each of those actually looks like to someone who's never heard of the business before, rather than assuming they're in good shape.
Get the basics of local search right
A complete, accurate Google Business Profile — correct hours, contact details, category and photos — is one of the highest-leverage things a Durban business can do for local visibility, and it costs nothing beyond the time to set it up properly and keep it updated.
Make sure the website actually helps
A website doesn't need to be elaborate to be useful — it needs to load quickly, clearly explain what the business does and for whom, and make it obvious how to get in touch or request a quote. Many local business websites fail on the second or third point even when the design looks polished.
Be consistent before being everywhere
It's tempting to try to be active on every platform at once. In practice, a business is usually better served by being genuinely consistent on the one or two channels its actual customers use, rather than spreading limited time thin across all of them and being inconsistent everywhere.
Review, then decide what's worth paying for
Once the basics — Google Business Profile, website clarity, one or two consistent channels — are in place, it becomes much clearer whether paid advertising or a bigger content push is actually worth the investment, and which channel it should go toward.
